The Old Harbor Inn
There is no shortage of charming hotels and bed & breakfasts in Savannah Georgia. Selecting just one can be an overwhelming experience. There is a good chance, however, that the one you select will be haunted.
If its convenience you seek, look no further than the Old Harbor Inn. Located between River Street and Factor's Walk, the Old Harbor Inn is just steps to restaurants, shopping and all the city of Savannah has to offer. But be warned, this once cotton warehouse has quite the past...a past that seems to have lingered beyond check out time.
Many of the old buildings along Savannah's famed River Street were once warehouses used to store cotton. Built in 1892, the Old Harbor Inn was originally one such warehouse. Legend has it that the Old Harbor Inn is haunted by the spirit of one of the old warehouse's employees, an unfortunate fellow lovingly nicknamed "Hank".
As the story goes, Hank was a disgruntled employee. He resented his job in the sweltering warehouse. He was a real lazy bones; he would rather sit around smoking cigars than working at all. One day he approached his boss asking for a raise. His boss, none-to-impressed by Hank's boldness, told him to get back to work and forget about a raise. In a gesture of sarcasm, Hank reached into his pocket and retrieved a coin. He then flicked the coin at his boss threatening if he didn't get a raise nobody would benefit from all the cotton stored in the warehouse. But what did he mean? Was he implying that he was going to do something nasty and vengeful? Ironically, that very night the warehouse caught on fire destroying all of the precious cotton. But what's even more ironic, when the ruble was being cleared a very gruesome discovery was made. The charred remains of a body was found in the smoldering ashes, burned beyond recognition. Was it Hank? Many seem to think so.
Guests at the Old Harbor Inn have experienced very unusual things. The smell of cigar smoke in empty hallways, objects being moved on their own accord, even mysterious coins falling out of nowhere. Could it be old Hank paying them a tip? Or perhaps he's still making his empty threats from beyond the grave.
